Artist Statement

When multinational logistics and industrial real estate company Prologis undertook a major renovation of its global headquarters in San Francisco, it tasked Habitat Horticulture with creating a centerpiece, setting the tone for its office interior. Prologis wanted something with a ‘wow’ factor, and Habitat Horticulture worked closely with architects Perkins and Will to achieve that. The resulting living wall, a burst of greens suspended in the middle of an otherwise industrial-looking space of whites and greys, has a striking effect. It grounds the space, providing a counterpoint to the cold materials around it that makes the office feel more dynamic and alive. Employees benefit by feeling more energetic and driven and becoming more productive.

The wall was designed and placed so it could be seen from different points around the office, while also providing an intimate-feeling space where staff could sit and recharge. When speakers come to the office, the wall is often used as the backdrop. The main wall is complemented by a smaller wall which serves as a preview – giving way to the feature piece. The species chosen for this wall were influenced by the Prologis logo, bringing the company blues, greens and chartreuse into the palette. The composition even evokes the logo’s shapes. Bright Philodendron ‘Lemon Lime’ provides movement across the wall, calling to mind the company’s growth and global reach.
